Dry facial skin is a very common skin problem.  The cause is varied but the biggest well-kept secret could be the cosmetics and a few other skin care products.  This article will help you identify what may be causing your dry facial skin. Also you will find in this article not only the cause of dry face skin but in the resource box a link on How to Moisturize Facial Skin & Get Rid of Dry Facial Skin.

Let’s first find your cause of your skin problem and then find an effective solution.  The goal is to have a healthy, smooth skin appearance on the face and the body.

**Start Here For a “New Look”

Most people have some areas of dryness combined with some oilier areas, usually concentrated on the nose and forehead.  We refer to that as a combination skin-type.

** Don’t “take a powder”

The idea that a shiny nose or forehead is unattractive is not a new one.  Until recently, most women would pat on pressed colored talcum powder to reduce the shine.

Talc has fallen out of favor for a number of reasons.  Inhaling it can cause lung damage.  The tiny particles seem to migrate through the skin’s surface according to researchers.  Besides, it’s an old product.  Everyone wants something new.

Toners are some of the newer products.  They are not much different from their predecessors, the astringents.  Both have been promoted as the answer to excessive oiliness, which is blamed for the shine.

**Dry Skin Cause – Alcohol

The alcohol in toners and astringents cause dry facial skin.  They provide no benefit for oilier areas.  If used frequently, they will stimulate the skin’s sebaceous glands to produce even more oil.  Now, you see how your skincare products can work against you.

Washing too frequently is often cited as a cause of excessive dryness, but it really depends on the ingredients in the cleanser.  Read the label of the cleanser you are currently using.  More than likely, you will find that it contains ethanol, methanol, isopropyl or denatured alcohol.

**Tap Water Chemicals  & Temperature – Big Cause of Dry Skin

The chemicals in tap water are most certainly a cause of dry facial skin.  In some cases, they cause rashes, pimples and other unpleasant reactions.  Chlorine, chloramines and bromine are among the chemicals found in publicly treated water supplies.  They are all skin-irritants.

Bathing in water that is too hot or too cold can cause excessive dryness anywhere on the body.  Check your hands and arms.  If you see flaky, whitish looking spots, try changing your water temperature.

**Petroleum Based Products – Cause

Another big problem is what companies tout as treatments for excessive dryness.  Petroleum-based oils and other petrochemicals abound in the lotions on the market today.  They are not moisturizing.  They actually make dry facial skin worse as time goes by.

**Exfoliation Ingredients Cause

That brings me to exfoliation.  Companies that sell exfoliants make claims about the products that are simply overstated.  Do you really think that scrubbing away at your face will reveal a clearer younger looking layer of skin?  I hope not.

Excessive scrubbing causes redness and dryness.  Common ingredients included in exfoliants can cause tiny scratches on the skin’s surface that can become irritated and infected, making you look worse than ever before.
