Dry Skin Causes

What’s really causing your dry skin problem.

Though most cases of dry skin are caused by environmental exposures, certain diseases also can significantly alter the function and appearance of your skin.

Simple causes include harsh soap, lack of moisture, itchy clothing, improper skin care products or cosmetics , and long, hot showers. The medications you take, and even medical conditions such as diabetes, and psoriasis , can also cause severe dryness.

While patches of dry, itchy skin can appear anywhere, it’s most common on the face, arms, hands, lower legs, and abdomen.

Potential causes of skin dryness include:

Weather. This common problem is often caused by exposure to low-humidity environments. The cold, harsh dry air of winter is one of the most common causes of dryness. In general, your skin is driest in winter, when temperatures and humidity levels plummet.
Hot baths and showers. Prolonged exposure to water -especially hot water — can wash away the natural oils that protect your skin. Limit your bath and shower time and use warm, rather than hot, water.
Central heating and air conditioning. Even climate-controlled environments can play a part in drying your skin. Air conditioning removes water from indoor air and has a drying effect on skin. Central heating often compounds the problem and can actually cause humidity levels to drop inside the living space.
Harsh soaps One of the biggest problems people have with dry skin stems from harsh soap especially deodorant soaps, and antibacterial soaps. Soap can quickly strip away your skin’s protective oils. For dry skin care, it’s best to use cleansing creams or gentle skin cleansers and bath or shower gels with added moisturizers. Look for milder, “fragrance-free” soaps.

Dry Skin Treatment

One way to maintain that youthful glow is to subscribe to a skin care treatment regimen. This treatment regimen will help your dry facial skin restore moisture when it’s needed.

When skin becomes dehydrated it loses its flexibility and becomes cracked, scaly and sometimes itchy.

As we grow older, our skin changes. It begins to lose its capacity to retain moisture. This loss of moisture retention capacity is intensified by climatic conditions – sun, wind, and low humidity.

A wide variety of lotions and creams are available to smooth out our skin. Proper usage of these products can produce some amazing results like a glowing, healthy look in the skin.

Moisturize your skin.

Moisturizers provide a seal over your skin to keep water from escaping. Apply moisturizers immediately after bathing. Gently pat or blot your skin dry with a towel so that some moisture remains on the skin.
